What to do when removing your old storage heaters

Start Saving!

Change to a standard tariff from your Overnight Economy tarfiff

Homes who use storage heaters store heat overnight using cheap rate Economy tariffs, which will no longer be a benefit if using radiators so when switching storage heaters off permanently, start by switching to a competitive standard daytime energy tariff.

Shop around for the best tariff

Sticking with your existing electric supplier may not give you the best deal on a new daytime energy tariff for putting electric radiators into your home. Spend some time researching to find the best cost tariff to suit your new heating appliances and get it set up in preparation for the removal of storage heaters to make the most of the changeover to electric radiators!

Choose your new radiators to suit your needs

Not all radiators are equal in terms of quality or performance and there are different models to hopefully match your requirement. It’s important to look at what your precise needs are when heating all the rooms in your home, whether it’s heating a single room for just a few hours in the evening or heating multiple rooms throughout each day.
The size and power of radiator required will depend on how big the room is that you want to heat and for large rooms more than one radiator may be a better option to give better heat distribution across the whole room.

Physically remove your old storage heaters

Removing a storage heater isn’t a Do It Yourself job so you need to bring professionals in to do. If your new heating has been specified and is ready to be installed at the same time as removal, get them wired in at the same time saving on installation costs. Storage heaters are hardwired into a fused spur so an electrician must disconnect all the heaters from the mains connection before their physical removal. Check that your installer will dispose of the old heaters and any associated waste units for you as part of their service, otherwise you will need to remove them yourselves and storage heaters and their internal bricks are heavy items to move.

Post Installation Service

Check that the cost of installing your new heating system or having a hot water thermal store fitted that your installer service includes the programming and setting up your new heating system for you, so you know how everything works.
